I wrote this song as a challenge to myself. It was a rather
cliche challenge: I would open a book, point to a phrase, and
write a song around it. I've tried that before, but I think
this is the only time I've actually liked something that came
out of it.
The recording process was very basic. I did the piano part to
a click track in Cubase SX, then sang over it. I hate playing
over a click track. I never feel like what I'm playing sounds
natural. If I could make a good split track live recording,
I think the result would be much better for simple pieces like
this. Although that really limits me on what I can do with the
vocals.
I have experimented with recording a song on separate tracks
without a click track. I'll be a Penitent Boy was done like
that. I can make it work, but it makes the process of adding
other instruments to the mix ten times harder, and it especially
limits what I can add for a rhythm section (notice there are
no drums in Penitent Boy...I like it that way, but again, because
of how I recorded it adding them would be nearly impossible
now, anyway.)
